The Triple A of Leadership

In most companies, you’re given one of the three A’s. Sometimes two. But almost never all three.
Years ago, a former colleague and dear friend said something we have never forgotten. She was describing the Triple A of grown-up leadership:
- Autonomy: the freedom to decide how.
- Accountability: the ownership of the outcome.
- Authority: the power to actually act.
She was right. Most of us spend years being held accountable for results we could not fully control, or handed autonomy without the authority to back it up.
So here is the reflection. What if a leader gave all three at once, paired with a crystal-clear description of the outcome expected? No hidden agenda. No second-guessing. No taking back the keys halfway through.
Just this: here is the result we need. You decide the how. You own the outcome. And you have the authority to make it happen.
That is not delegation. It is trust in motion.
It is also a useful test for any handoff. When the person who owns the customer outcome is missing one of the three, the customer feels it.
Take the first step.
